The Enterprise is returning to the planet they have had a shore leave some years ago. All are looking forward to having a holiday where their wishes are fulfilled. On the planet McCoy tries to implement a fantasy of the old South. Instead of finding himself in that time he encounters the Queen of Hearts shouting: "Off with his head!"
Uhura encounters another strange fate. She is captured by a robot. Kirk finds a grave. It is the grave of the keeper of the planet. He ha died and was the last of his race. When Kirk and Spock find Uhura, they discover that the planet's computer has taken over the duty of the keeper, but the computer does not want to be the servant any more after the keeper has died. Spock and Kirk can divert the computer from hostile action to another course, and Spock works on with the computer while the others relax on the planet.
