The Alar, a brainwave pattern to turn aggressive people (the Skorr) into peaceful people, has been stolen from the Vedala. The Vedala are a sophisticated race, actually the first race ever to travel into interstellar space. Now the Vedala contact the Enterprise.

Kirk and Spock are requested to assist to retrieve the device. If the Alar, or the "Soul of Skorr" remained in the wrong hands a jihad, in this case a galaxy wide war, would break out. A group emerges to find the Soul of Skorr, amongst them a prince of the Skorr. They succeed.


As they find out that this prince is determined to get it for the Skorr alone they need the Vedala's aid and the situation is secured.
