In the shuttlecraft Copernicus, Spock, Uhura, and Sulu are en-route to Starbase 25 to deliver a stasis box - a rare artifact of the Slaver culture.

The now-extinct Slavers used these objects to carry weapons, valuables, and other scientific instruments and data. The boxes can detect each other and evidence shows that another device is located nearby.

To find it Spock, Uhura and Sulu approach Copernicus in the shuttlecraft. They hope to find the other Slave stasis box there, having the original box with them. After their arrival on the planet, they all are taken prisoners by the aggressive Kzins in a "police web". These are catlike people in appearance trying to obtain the Slaver's technology. After contacting their ship, the Kzin captain, called the Chuft captain, finds a weapon in Spock's stasis box. Trying it out the captain puts the police web out of function by accident – and injures himself.
Though the three can escape, Uhura is held. Now Spock agrees to fight the captain in spite of his injuries. In the meantime Sulu arranges for a nuclear explosion. Again the captain tries to use the weapon. Using the wrong code he makes the weapon explode. In consequence his ship is destroyed and his people, too.
